FF.net down

This site has to be the most unreliable POS in the history of the web. It seems like it can't go even two months without going offline.

Well, I won't blame them, seriously people, think about it, they receive countless of thousands of updates EACH DAY, 24/7, from all over the world, it's a wonder the site is not down more often. I for one am amazed they are able to keep their servers going for a week even with the humongous amount of information they have to manage daily. Besides, they provide a FREE SERVICE! you can't really be complaining now since you don't have to pay for the site, they manage with just the money they get from advertising(Trust me, it's not much, it never is) Stop complaining people, the site is not taxing you for the service, they do what they can to keep up for weeks a site that by all means of logic should be down every two days, and don't worry about the site dissapearing, I don't see that happening soon, given how dedicated the staff is(look, the site is back up just as I'm finishing this message if that's not dedication then I don't know what is)

What are you on? The site's still down.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
It was up as I finished the message, it's down again, though I'm not surprised usually problems are not fixed that easily, if you have tried running a site, of any size, and have had the same problems at some point you should know, now try with a site as big as FF.n and the problem should be harder to solve

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
That's no excuse. A large prestigious site means they need to have the best team around to keep it up. Many other sites with similar traffic don't act that badly.

If they can't crap, they should get off the pot, if you excuse my French.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
The shoudl have the best team around to keep it up? And what money will pay that wonderful team pray tell me? And what other sites are you talking about? Are they free for you to use? If you find the site's problems so annoying why are you still using it?

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
And why are you still replying to this?

See, two can play the strawman game, too.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I reply because I find annoyign that people complains about somehting they have nto idea about, it's hard to keep up a site that has to deal with so much data, let alone without the proper funds, so you people have really no room to complain at all

I still get a blank page

If it's crappy and unreliable why ar eyou using it to ebign with? I don't consider it crappy or unreliable, as I say they manage a huge amount of data on a daily basis and seeing as the server is up most of the time and the problems they have never take longer than 5 hours to solve then that speaks wonders about their reliavility

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Some do take longer than five hours, just saying.

Oh wait, okay, not five hours. Because it get works, stops, works, stops, works, rinse and repeat...so it never becomes a continuous five hours.

But if the problem keeps repeating itself, shouldn't they have found a way to fix it by now? Being reliable and all...

We use it because they pretty much have a monopoly on the fanfiction department as it is. If we had better options we wouldn't be at their mercy, believe me.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Use freaking GOOGLE god dammit! There are other sites, true, they don't have as many stories as at FF.n but there are other option, also for those with an specific fandom preference they can look for sites with stories from that specific fandom http://www.fictionesque.com/, http://archiveofourown.org/media, http://fanfic.vjad.net/stories/

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
but then, the favorite story, favorite author and story alerts doesn't get transferred through Google noh?
At this point, I'm only staying for the convenience of getting update alrets from old ongoing stories. AO3 is wonderful.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Most of those pages are too limited in scope and stories, because people are sheep and always keep flogging to FF.Net no matter how many times it bites us in the butt.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Then stop complaining because a free site that is so big should have been down long ago, keeping up this site must be annoying for the staff, even more with so many people complaining and sayign that they can do the job better than them yet don't do it, you keep coming to the site because you enjoy the stories posted there, they can very well send everything to hell and then you wouldn't have those stories anymore, I for one don't understand why is it that they haven't done it yet

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
Ooookay. Its still down for me too

It's not free.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Saying it's free service is like saying Google is also free. It's not. They make money from ads. Users don't have to pay anything up front, but users pay through popups, blinking ads and hits. Every click makes them money. So no, it's not "free".

(Anonymous) 2010-12-01 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
People can complain all they want, free service or not.

Your experience might not give you a lot of revenue, but FanfictionNet makes A LOT of money from their users from those pesky ads. There was a whole debacle about it back when the site was new.

Do you even go here?
