Problems

*Head-desking repetitively* What the hell is going on with fanfiction! It was okay for awhile, then it started acting up again. Now, I cannot log in at all.

I love fanfiction, most certainly I do. I have grown up reading stories and writing my own on there. It has helped me grow as a writer by far. Yet, this is too much! I do not want to be able to update one day, then the next not even be able to log in. It is stupid and highly tedious that I have to wait just to update my stories! Then, they want me to download software I have never even heard of? Are you serious fanfiction? Do you seriously want me to wait forever just to update? How long do you honestly believe your writers will deal with this crap?

I will admit I am not a patient person. I never have been and I probably never will. However, I do have some patience for fanfiction. Nevertheless, this is only because of my favorite fandom. I am a huge Puzzleshipping fan and I love to read and write about it. However, I am starting to be fed up with their crap. I am sick of the constant error messages and ads. Simply, I am sick of it all!

Yes, I know I sound like a spoiled brat, but I cannot help it. I love fanfiction dearly and I hate how it is acting like this.

So, is anyone else having this problem? In addition, has anyone decided to join Archive of Our Own? I already sent a request to join. I may stay with fanfiction, but I may keep that account just in case.

Everybody is having the same problem. Also, the suggestion to dwnload LibreOffice is just a suggestion. You don't have to download it.

I just got in for a moment, but got kicked out. Think the problem will be fixed soon.

It's been acting up since Friday night - every single alert I've received that a story/author I'm following has posted something new refuses to display on the site. I can't log in. This site is ridiculous.

It really is absurd the amount of problems this site is having! These are all problems that have occurred before. I often wonder if they have any clue what they are doing when they do upgrades?! I don;t care if the site is big there is no excuse for the same problems to occur over and over again. Especially with things as fundamental as logging in!

I spent time on the broken Fiction Press where you couldn't edit stories for over a week exporting stories to booksie.com which I've joined and LOVE already. I got tons of comments and "fans" their equivalent of alerts. I only wish they had a FF.net counterpart. They do have a FF section but it's pretty small and all Twilight/Harry Potterish.

Those two sites are the most buggy, least stable sites I've seen. Others are bigger, with fewer people working on them and maybe go down once or twice a year (besides updates which are posted ahead of time). It's all in how you take care of your site regularly and whether or not you know what the hell you're doing.

These folks clearly are in way over their heads. They update, they break over and over and over again. Who needs that?

They could charge the writers for using (but can't charge the readers for reading b/c of copyright issues) but who'd pay for a site that's down somewhere at least once or twice or more a month. I mean it's April 11 and they've had three outages on both sides at least. That's called incompetence.

Mine are both back up but they didn't FIX ANY OF THE PROBLEMS with either site. Updates still don't update and the online editor on FP is still broken.

Back to importing my stuff to Bookie.

Well, I was just able to log in, but there's still no new stories or chapters or anything showing up.

And you pretty much summed up my current feelings about the site. At this point, I would go somewhere else, but I don't post that much. And going somewhere else to read doesn't do any good when I can't find stories about the character I want to read about on any other archive.

Looks like it's working for me at the moment, I'm logged in. I'll wait before updating, though, I want to make sure it's not going to fail again in five minutes.

Even if you could update, there seems to be a very slim chance your story will actually show up. The site still isn't showing any stories that were posted within the last twenty-four hours.

I've been on A03 for a while, and it's great. Very pretty. But it won't get you the stats that ff.net will. So I stick with both, plus LJ (where people tend to leave very thoughtful reviews). If you can be bothered cross posting, it's better to give people the option of where to read, especially if/when something like this happens :)

As for what's up with ff.net, looks like they're performing maintenance? Hopefully they'll be done soon.

Log-in worked for me just now! Let's hope it can stay that way

Well, I can at least log in now. On my main page, it shows that my newest chapter is up ... it just won't let me access it yet on the main site. Progress is being made, it would seem.

It's working again for me now. Left a review and replied to one too.

But I hope whatever they did stops my alerts being set to disabled all the time. ¬_¬

Same problem! Not even the adblocker is working...thankfully, the ads don't appears to be being their usual annoying selves, but still. Also, the type two error appears to be showing up now even on chapters that already exist.

YES! It's doing it to me too! I'm so frustrated! I have two chapters ready to update and nope...can't even log in. Grr!

I'm a member of Archive of our Own and it seems like a pretty good site, but my fandom is mainly on FF.net. So, if I want people to read my fic I guess I have to keep dealing with the mystery error messages. Even so, I've been thinking about cross posting there and letting readers know that on my profile page at ff.net.

I Couldn't Agree More. . .

You took the words right out of my mouth! I admit that as of late, I've been a busy person with not a whole time on my hands to write. So therefore, I haven't been paying too much attention with what's been going at FFN. But I've come to accept--as much I hate it!--that this is just typical behavior from that website. It just sucks that
when I actually do find time to write and would like to post shortly after, FFN goes all screwy! First no log-in, now just a blank screen. Grr. Big Grr.

So, you're not alone here. And I'm not sure what "Archive of Our Own" is, so I can't give you an answer. But I don't think you sound like a spoiled brat, in fact quite the opposite. You sound like a reasonable person who's had it with an unrealiable website. You have every right to be frustrated. I know I am.

AO3 is a large fan fiction archive at http://archiveofourown.org/

It has become the usual third option, besides fanfiction.net and adultfanfiction.net.

Archive of Our Own is a great place to use as a back-up or redirect. At least then people can get updates. So far, the only time I've noticed AO3 being down a lot was around Yuletide, and that's just once a year (and maybe won't happen next year, if they've ironed out the bugs).

Yes, I know I sound like a spoiled brat No way. It does not make you a spoiled brat to expect the site to actually do what it's supposed to do. I haven't been able to log in once all weekend (and it's Sunday night here). It's so frustrating because I finally finished my latest NCIS story, and I want to put it up so bad!
