I got to log in! AND POST
Hello! I just wanted to tell people that I have managed to log into FF.net AND update not only my profile but also my story as well! I though I'd better share the news and tell people how I did it. FF.net IS really is annoying and I know there's been problems at the site before and it can get really, really, really frustrating but dang it if I can't live without it! It's my drug of choice!
Okay, first to log in: when it took me to that "not in service" page, I just continued to hit the refresh button every time I walked by the computer until it took me to the main page.
Next, I went to my document manager and again tried to upload my new document. This went on for like, three hours.
Deciding to try my profile, I went to the "edit profile page" and after hitting the refresh button a million times again, I was able to bring up the edits function. It was when I hit “Save” that again I was taken to the "Sorry" page. Again hitting the refresh button (this time hitting an additional "resend" button firefox prompted) I was able to successfully save my profile and it was updated.
So I went back to messing around with the document manager upload button until an hour later it finally hit me! If I could save my Profile page... why couldn't I re-save an OLD document with the new material. I decided to test this theory.
Success ~! I was able to save an older document with the new material! Then all I had to do was go to the "my stories" section (again hitting the refresh button a million times) and edit story.
Then all I had to do was upload the older document with the new material in the add chapter selection and there you have it! My chapter was uploaded and I even check my own e-mail to make sure and sure enough there was the "story alert" e-mail telling me it had been a success!
So there you have it! A lot of patience and a determination to see it done! I hope this helps some people! I know I was dancing around the house all giddy when I got it done!
EDIT: On a quick note, one of my fellow writers mentioned she went to the firefox main page and got an addition called "refresh Every" where you can set the page automatically refresh itself from anywhere between 5 seconds to ten minutes. It certainly saves your fingers from cramping!

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)I'd love to at least get to my profile to leave directions either there or as a response to a review. I'm in the middle of two fanfictions, one that's over 135,000 words long so it was a big investment but if this is how this site handles its problems, it won't be keeping its readers who follow stories for very long or its writers who have to refresh 100 times per screen to post (which might be complicating the problems further). And if it's taking them this long to fix it, then if they ever do, it could go down again due to increased traffic flow. Hopefully, they are at least aware that this could happen.

Oh it will be back! It always is. I've been at FFN for over 3 years now and this happens maybe, oh, 2-3 times a year? Where it will go down for days at a time. I'm not worried about the site not coming back up. I'm just frustrated because I can't get my FFN fix. LOL!
What I DO NOT appreciate is the lack of input from the ADMIN when something like this happens. They sometimes post a one liner AFTER they fix a problem but never let their members know what's up DURING a crisis and THAT is bad business, IMO.
