I got to log in! AND POST

Hello! I just wanted to tell people that I have managed to log into FF.net AND update not only my profile but also my story as well! I though I'd better share the news and tell people how I did it.  FF.net IS really is annoying and I know there's been problems at the site before and it can get really, really, really frustrating but dang it if I can't live without it! It's my drug of choice!

Okay, first to log in: when it took me to that "not in service" page, I just continued to hit the refresh button every time I walked by the computer until it took me to the main page.

Next, I went to my document manager and again tried to upload my new document. This went on for like, three hours.

Deciding to try my profile, I went to the "edit profile page" and after hitting the refresh button a million times again, I was able to bring up the edits function. It was when I hit “Save” that again I was taken to the "Sorry" page. Again hitting the refresh button (this time hitting an additional "resend" button firefox prompted) I was able to successfully save my profile and it was updated.

So I went back to messing around with the document manager upload button until an hour later it finally hit me! If I could save my Profile page... why couldn't I re-save an OLD document with the new material. I decided to test this theory.

Success ~! I was able to save an older document with the new material! Then all I had to do was go to the "my stories" section (again hitting the refresh button a million times) and edit story.

Then all I had to do was upload the older document with the new material in the add chapter selection and there you have it! My chapter was uploaded and I even check my own e-mail to make sure and sure enough there was the "story alert" e-mail telling me it had been a success!

So there you have it! A lot of patience and a determination to see it done! I hope this helps some people! I know I was dancing around the house all giddy when I got it done!

EDIT: On a quick note, one of my fellow writers mentioned she went to the firefox main page and got an addition called "refresh Every" where you can set the page automatically refresh itself from anywhere between 5 seconds to ten minutes. It certainly saves your fingers from cramping!

THANK YOU!!!!!!

The site has been down for three days now and it's really starting to annoy me...the one time I WANT to post, it's not working.

I have no patience, LOL, but I'm gonna try doing this.

Thanks again!!!!!

Tina

I'm glad it's not just me. I've never posted, hell never WRITTEN a fic before last week and now I can't get in to ff.net to post it!

Thank you so much for this info!! But are you able to review and stuff?

I had gotten through to various account area pages once in a while, but I hadn't tried saving anything. Thanks for verifying that it is possible to edit documents and chapters. I just added my latest chapter, and it didn't even take that long - maybe 15 minutes at most.

I'm moving all my chapters and stories to another site. Even if I have to get my own. This is so ridiculous and so unprofessional to not even come here (which you can easily find through Google) to issue some kind of update on when the site will return.

Agreed on the ridiculousness of it all. They could do far better at monitoring the site and notifying everyone of problems. Given that umpty bazillion people emailed their support address about the down time, I find it difficult to believe that they're not aware of it.

I do cross-post on other archives, such as Fan Nation and a small fandom-specific site. However, I don't want to leave fanfiction.net and Fiction Press entirely because they have such a huge readership. My stories get the most hits by far over there.

Some other people have recommended different general-purpose fiction archives in the original downtime post. I hope that one or more of them provides a better home for your work.

I'd love to push the refresh button all day and night but I can't do it to update a story. Not that I'm not glad it works for those who can. It's been 48 hours and no update of any type of whether or not they are even fixing this problem. Big huge site perhaps. Very low professionalism. You can't run a site with tens of thousands of visitors like a mom&pop. It doesn't work...well.

I'm convinced there are only like 2-3 people running the entire site. There's no way to really contact anyone if something does wrong and when you do, no one ever responds.

Yes!! Its working! Thank you so much! Review is also possible after reloading the box a few times... But I only wish things were normal like they were earlier.

Thank You!! Thank You!! THANK YOU!!! This has been driving me insane for the last five days. >.< I can finally log in!

WOW. Well, I tried the refresh method myself and it totally didn't work for me. The back button and retry method worked to get me into the main settings page for my account, but that was it. *sob* It promptly crashed.

At least someone got in.

Not even refreshing for like, 100 times, makes it work for me.
I feel like killing someone, but since I suspect FFNET has got a staff of two or three people, I would only make things worse, lol :D

Oh My.

[identity profile] rj-midwest.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Chyeaah, I can't log in at all. I think i've got a RSI fron double-clicking refresh so much... D: Urgh, is it normal to suffer withdrawal symptoms for reviewing FanFiction? I think it is. Lol.

Haha, aw. I say forget FF.net having Forums. They should just have a support group for addicts like us when they epically fail with fixing things. :]

Is this site down for good?

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
No response to an email I sent early. I'm glad I backed up my FF and am looking for elsewhere to post it.

Haven't been at FF that long so I've got no brand loyalty and this episode especially the lack of communication. They can do what other sites do and Google to find out where discussions like this take place and leave a brief message at a site like this one to provide some sort of update if they can't at their own site. That's what other sites with even less people to handle situations like this have done. Why? Because even if it's extra work, they genuinely care about the people who use their site.

But I'm not impressed especially if these server issues and the lack of ability to fix them is a regular thing. Yes, it's nice to have a larger audience of readers but if you can't post your FF due to "glitches", I'll take the site with the smaller audience or create my own and (re)build my own audience.

[identity profile] nierielraina.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't taken the time to read through all the comments here but I have to ask, if it takes so much to update, what's the point? Your readers are not going to show the same patience in reviewing, so posting during such a glitch, even if you can 'beat' it, isn't helping you one bit! You'll lose reviews you would have gotten because by the time the glitch is fixed, your readers will for the most part have forgotten they didn't review that chapter. I'd much rather just hold my chapters and wait it out - though I WOULD like to be able to alter my profile right now to direct my readers to an alternate archive where I post! I'm so freaking SICK of the glitches! If I could get the reviews elsewhere, I'd have left FFN years ago!

I'm looking elsewhere too. It's hard to keep writing because I'm not sure I believe that it's going to return any time soon because I think if were 95% of any type of problem, it would be back unless the people running it have no clue about IT issues.

I'd love to at least get to my profile to leave directions either there or as a response to a review. I'm in the middle of two fanfictions, one that's over 135,000 words long so it was a big investment but if this is how this site handles its problems, it won't be keeping its readers who follow stories for very long or its writers who have to refresh 100 times per screen to post (which might be complicating the problems further). And if it's taking them this long to fix it, then if they ever do, it could go down again due to increased traffic flow. Hopefully, they are at least aware that this could happen.

Oh it will be back! It always is. I've been at FFN for over 3 years now and this happens maybe, oh, 2-3 times a year? Where it will go down for days at a time. I'm not worried about the site not coming back up. I'm just frustrated because I can't get my FFN fix. LOL!

What I DO NOT appreciate is the lack of input from the ADMIN when something like this happens. They sometimes post a one liner AFTER they fix a problem but never let their members know what's up DURING a crisis and THAT is bad business, IMO.

I would love to have a different account somewhere. I wouldn't leave FFN entirely, but it would still be nice to have an alternative site that gets close to the same audience as FFN, but I've yet to find a single site. That's why I've stuck with FFN as long as I have.

this is why I am grateful I am involved in only ONE fandom! I post at many Tolkien archives so if someone really wants to read my work, they will find me elsewhere and I can continue posting at those sites. Only one of those comes close on the feedback though and let's face it, we all like the feedback! :P If I didn't get more than half my reviews at FFN, I'd leave too, but the smaller archives, even fandom specific ones such as lotrfanfiction.com do not have the reviewer base of FFN. :(

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
My fandom as it were doesn't have many writers only a couple though I'm trying to get more people to write. But I have a good readership. But again, if you can't publish even on a big site that can't resolve a server issue in 48 hours, then it doesn't do much good. I'm relatively new and boy, I'm not just impressed if this is a regular thing. Days of down periods due to server issues which do have "glitches" but not this long most of the time.

[identity profile] nierielraina.livejournal.com 2009-02-24 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said, this isn't the norm for the site. This only happens a couple times a year at most. On the whole, I'm happy with FFN for the most part. Sure there are issues that bug me, but usually glitches are fixed faster than this. From what I'm told Fictionpress is having the same issues, so it's probably a big deal they are dealing with. It'll be back up. Just be patient. We are way too spoiled now a days by instant gratification. :p

Depends on what you consider worthwhile.

The story I updated appeals to a small audience within a quiet fandom. It doesn't get much traffic, let alone reviews, and the reader most avid about reviewing that sort of story already had the fic on alert. Given that someone else had managed to post a chapter, I figured that I might as well try. Either my readers would have something new to look at, or I would have wasted a few minutes in between my usual Internet surfing activity. As it was, I posted the chapter without much fussing required.

I would have left the new chapter for later if I'd had trouble getting through the submission process, or if it were a more popular story within a busy fandom.

That is true - and another reason why I didn't want to spend a lot of time trying to get in.

I suspect that when it goes back up, we'll see a flood of excited comments. Still, I'm with you on the periodic (but not excessive) checking.

Refreshing constantly puts more traffic through a server that can't handle it. One of the reasons why the error message pops up. One would think if they were repairing or replacing it, it would be offline.

I think its back up

(Anonymous) 2009-02-24 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think FF is fixed up. I've gotten two signed reviews and have been wandering the login area freely. Might just be me
