Dead alerts???

Wish I'd found this community earlier, 'cause God knows ff.n gives me plenty to bitch about!

I haven't gotten e-mails for reviews in almost a week. I know I'm getting reviews, because I see them when I log in and check my stats, but notifications are dead. Am I correct in assuming that ALL alerts are down, including new chapter/story updates? I have a new fic that will probably be ready to post by the end of the weekend, but I'm loath to post it if no one's going to know it's there.

Looks like all alerts are down. Go ahead and post it, I'd say, because the alerts will go out...eventually...we hope...

Gaaaah! I didn't even notice that! I just thought I was getting no reviews. >.< (Two on my new fic, ha! I feel better now.)

I think when notifications go down, they all go down. (and then get sent out in mass later) I'm waiting too because when I post my next fic I don't want to have to check the site every day to find new reviews and reply to them. XP I'm lazy.

I'm sort of with you. If it were just the latest chapter of a WIP, I might go ahead and post it and just hope that people would wander by and see it, but since it's the start of an entirely new fic that people weren't really expecting, I'm afraid it would get lost in the shuffle.

Plus, it's not done yet. :-P

Here's hoping the site magically heals itself within the next couple of days. Is it just me, or has it been broken more often than not the past few months?

Typical, they fix uploading and alerts breaks. That's ff for ya, when ff.net opens a door somewhere it closes a window.

I just went over to find a review sitting there since 17th and I'm always so quick to answer them. Grrr...

ff.net ranters unite! I am DYING to upload another chapter of my fic, but I'm not gonna do it until I know the alerts are working again. And I wasn't impressed to find that the review replies I sent out for my last chapter didn't reach their destinations either!

Strewth I forgot of course that the reviewer won't even have seen my (late) reply! And won't do until the alerts come back. I think I'll go see if their email address is available.

Mwhaha! That's still broken too! It's a conspiracy I tell ya, to make me look like a rude person that doesn't answer reviews! Why the heck can't we read PMs on the site itself?

Does anyone think Fanfiction and Fictionpress may die for good, sooner, rather than later? And is there an alternative?

I've looked at a couple of other places and to be honest they make you glad for the refreshing simplicity of the fanfiction.net model!
http://www.writing.com/ and http://www.quizilla.com/ for example just make it too hard to find anything! Though I suspect my brain is simply too old to understand Quizilla. ;-) I've not even got as far as trying to post anything on those.

The great thing about ff.net is, as you say, the simplicity. It's just a real shame that they can't get their act together and fix the site so it actually works for longer than a week at a time!

My husband and I had a discussion about this last night, since I had to continue my rant over dinner. :-P He asked why I couldn't post in other places, and I said the problem is that ff.n is the first and the biggest, and the place most people still go, despite other fanfic sites that have popped up (or LJ comms). Also, I do really like the interface on ff.n in terms of reading fics. I like that I'm able to change the font to serif (I hate reading fics in sans serif fonts...makes them look like instructions on how to set up your stereo or something), and I like the simple white page with black text. It's easier to absorb large chunks of text in that format. About the only other site I've found that has an interface that's as easy on the eyes is Sycophant Hex, but that's only good if you're posting HP fics.

Anyone know where ff.n is based? If it's in California, maybe the hubby and I should drive over and hold the webmaster hostage while my husband (a programmer) picks the code apart and figures out why the site keeps breaking. :-P

I prefer http://www.lunaescence.com/, personally. It's tiny compared to ff.net, but it's good.

You can't really expect reviews, and it doesn't keep track of hits, but it's modorated to keep the worst of the crap out. At least there's a high percentage of readable fic. I found it more simple to use than ff.net.

But yeah, it is the biggest and the first. >.< Which is the only reason I could be talked into putting a sample of my stuff up there in the first place. So it just keeps getting bigger, because people look there first. *headkeys*

Yeah. I'm pretty happy my beta is taking longer than expected, so I have no reason to go and post before the site heals.

I have no idea if this is worse than normal, since I'm fairly new to actually posting stuff. >.< I would like to think this amount of suck is not normal. I hope it heals itself, I want my review replies to go out! I feel so bad because I finished them quickly for once, and no now one got them.

We're new but we've got lots of clout. The site is run by a company that has been producing fan events for the L-Word and Harper Collins and soon Star Trek. We're still in beta but we've already got more than 3,000 stories on site.

Fanlib.com is about community and giving writers the props they deserve. We feature stories on the home page each morning so maybe people will discover a new fandom and we offer prizes! (The Harper Collins winner got a development deal with Fox - how cool is that.)

I also love the new "badge" system that let's you post the full header for your story with a graphic to LJ and other sites with one step.

I hope you'll check it out and let me know what you think. We're still tweaking and would love to have your input.

Somebody's gotta know where the evil little troll who runs ff.n hangs out. Or maybe he's off in the Bahamas, buying drinks and babes with all the ill-gotten loot he's made from the annoying advertising on the site.

All I know is that when something breaks on that site, it's usually down for a week. So maybe on Wednesday it will magically heal itself.

Unfortunately, that seems to be all anime, manga, and gaming fiction, and I don't write any of those. Oh, well.

Yeah, that's becuase it mostly gets pimped around on anime forums and such. (There are sections for Books, Cartoons/Comic, Movies, and TV but I agree that those are pretty stunted)

It sounded from your comments that you are somehow connected to fanlib.com, so I thought I'd post this comment.
I checked it out and it definitely seems promising. I'd like to join. However, I tried to read a story (by double-clicking the title) and no text came up --Unless I was doing it wrong, which is possible, like maybe I doubleclicked the wrong area.
The other problem I encountered is when I tried to sign up for an account, at the part where you have to verify the string of letters against the colored background I kept getting a message to the effect that I wrote the wrong letters. Now I don't claim to be a genius, but I'm pretty sure I know the alphabet :) Unless it was case sensitive (although all the letters were the same size) I'm not sure how to get past this obstacle.
