I want a blank line.

Hi folks. I joined specially so that I could ask this. In my stories, I often use blank lines as delimiters for "Some time passes", or "And now we're in someone else's head" - things like that. I also use horizontal lines for scene breaks. "Meanwhile, back at the ranch..."
How do I make FanFiction.net not eat my blank lines?
I post stuff in HTML. I write stuff in TXT. I can stick most anything in my HTML since it's generated by a perl script for use on my own website. I've tried an empty line containing a non-breaking space <br> <br> and still they get eaten. I don't want to put anything visible there like a - or a ~ or a . because that's ugly.
Any idea?
